The FORMULA 48 Class Owners Association was formed in the summer of 2000 to meet the needs of those sailing enthusiasts who enjoy fast multihull sailing.   Until the formation of the United States Class, multihull racing for radio controlled boats was limited to Europe, France and Great Britain.  There were also a few other groups of multihull sailors found in Finland, Norway, Spain, New Zealand and Australia.

Being a new Class to the United States comes with some special problems. Little was known about this class of boats here in the U.S.  Lack of production builders, kits or used boats continues to hinder the growth of class.   While some have imported hulls or boats from overseas, most U.S. sailors must also be designers and builders, as well as sailors.  Building one's own boat offers unique insider peeks at how the boat was constructed, and generally provides the owner with a lot more information about his boat than just purchasing off the market.  The FORMULA 48 Class Owners Association currently is recognized and sails within the OPEN CLASS of the American Model Yacht Association (AMYA).

As the class grows here in the U.S. quantities of good used boats for resale is expected.  Currently plans are available for purchase, and several designs are also available for "Free" from designers or builders.
